The early life of robert e. lee
Robert E. Lee was born in January of 1807 to father Robert E. Lee the third, and to mother Anne Hill Carter. Lee spent most of his life in the same home. (Located at 607 Oronoco street, Alexandria, VA) Lee was born in Stratford Hall, Va. Lees father was never really around and left Lee to survive on his own. In 1809 Lees father was put in prison for owing a great amount of debt. When Lee was only 11 years of age, his father was injured in a political riot. He later died in Boston from his injuries. This left Lee to take care of the household and his heart-broken mother, since his brothers and sister were either to young, or weren't at home. A rather young Lee took care of his mother, younger siblings, the horses, household chores, and even going to the market. While Lees friends would play, Lee would rather be with his mother. Lee went to school at Eastern View, in Fauquier County. It was a school for young gentleman. Later on, Lee went to school at Alexandria Academy. It was a free local school where Lee was found to be highly gifted in mathematics. In 1824, when Lee was 17, he became entered in (United States Military Academy) West Point. Lee was submitted to West Point by a relative, in fact, the relative that owned the house Lees family was staying at. While a child Robert E. Lee depended a lot on his distant relatives. If it wasn't for them, mainly for one, (William Henry Fitzhugh) Lees family would have not have had a steady home to stay at through out his life. Lee also would have ever been admitted to either of the schools he went to; thus being said, Robert E. Lee wouldn't have become a leader of war without his distant relatives! Since there were so many students who enrolled at West Point, Lee had to wait until the summer of 1825 to begin classes. Lee graduated 2nd in his class in 1829. When Lee returned home, he found that his mother was very sick and on her death bed. Lee was heart-broken.
